Score 90/100 · Drink 2022-2026, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Apr 2022

From a hot and dry vintage that saw arid winds blowing up the Italian peninsula from North Africa in two distinct waves during the summer, the Mazzei 2011 Siepi is a warm-vintage wine. This blend of early-ripening Merlot (harvested on August 26th) and late-ripening Sangiovese (harvested on September 21st) reveals lots of volume and power, but the wine is more monotone from an aromatic point of view, with mature black fruit and sweet spice. On the palate, this vintage is soft and caressing, but it ultimately lacks the depth and complexity that both grapes, but especially the Sangiovese, show in cooler years. Production in this vintage was about 20,000 bottles.

Full bottle 1,516 g. Alcohol: 14.5%. Total acidity: 6.5 g/l. After a usefully wet winter and spring, vines shut down in late August and in early September came helpful rain. Harvest: hand-picked starting 26 August (Merlot), and then not until 21 September (Sangiovese). Fermentation temperature: 26–28 °C. Period of maceration: 14 days (Merlot), 18 days (Sangiovese). Ageing: 18 months in small French oak barrels (225 litre, 70% new). Bottling: June 2013. Production: 20,000 bottles. Bright mid crimson. Rich nose with the two elements well integrated and no obvious oak. Manages to be both savoury and sweet, and remarkably accessible. Tannins receding. Long and well balanced. (JR)

A dark, voluptuous beauty, the 2011 Siepi captures the style of this wine nicely. Black cherry, plum, mocha and cloves abound in a supple, racy Sangiovese/Merlot blend. Copious French oak and rich, voluptuous fruit with all of the raciness and ripeness of the vintage are two of the signatures in this generous, internationally styled red from Fonterutoli.
