The 2022 Evangelho Vineyard Heritage is from a more windblown region within Contra Costa County and is a cooler site that they harvested before the heat spike in September. A blend of roughly 70% Zinfandel and 15% Mourvèdre, along with a smattering of other varieties, it was aged primarily in second-use barrels. It displays a deeper purple hue and reveals deeply layered aromatics of pine, fresh plum, violets, dark earth, and wild herbs. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with plush texture, ripe tannins, and balanced, even acidity, closing with a savory finish. Drink 2025-2036.

Full bottle 1,215 g. Planted in the 1890s. Own-rooted vines on deep banks of sand. 65% Zinfandel, 25% Mourvèdre with the balance being Carignan, Mission, Palomino, Alicante Bouschet, Petit Bouschet and Grand Noir de la Calmette. Medium purple. Roasted red chilli, bramble and red plum – on the redder side of the spectrum for Zin. Fresh acidity, grippy tannin and a lengthy, spiced finish. (SCJ)
The 2022 Evangelho Vineyard Heritage comes from vines planted in the 1890s in sandy soils, which Bedrock now owns and farms. Grapes were harvested in August before the Labor Day heatwave, and the wine is composed mainly of Zinfandel. Matured in foudres and large demi-muids, it has layered aromas of blueberries and blackberries, peppered salumi, lilac and spicy undertones. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated core of perfumed fruit. It’s structured by clay-textured tannins and rounded acidity and has a long, mineral-driven finish.
