A mix of plum and cherry sauces, grilled sage, mocha and hints of sweet cream make the 2000 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico impossible to ignore. Its velvety textures find wonderful lift through a core of minerals and brisk acids, as masses of red berries and spices rush across the palate, drenching it in heady concentration. The energy here is remarkable and totally unexpected; the 2000 comes across as so refined and elegant. It tapers off persistent and still lightly structured, as a saturation of fruit lingers incredibly long, leaving violet florals and hints of lavender. Wow, just wow, a perfect example of how well Amarone can age. There are years of positive evolution in store for patient collectors. This is simply demanding of your attention and wanting to be enjoyed.

The 2000 Amarone has developed relatively quickly. The fruit remains fairly opulent, but suggestions of earthiness and worn-in leather suggest early signs of oxidation are creeping in. Ultimately the 2000 comes across a touch rustic and four-square.

Very dark and deep ruby, quite youthful still. Curious, upfront cassis and cassis leaf and cherry juice nose. Talcum powder. On the palate more restraint with youthful, dominating tannins (oak?), and underlying, but concentrated fruit. Somewhat unapproachable at the moment with nose and palate sending out different signals. Finish shows drying oak tannins. Very modern. (WS)
