A ripe, rounded effort that has loads of Provencal character is the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape from the team at Raymond Usseglio. With lots of garrigue, roasted meats, dried Provencal herbs and licorice-tinged fruit, medium to full-bodied richness and sweet tannin, this hedonistic beauty will continue to drinking nicely through 2027.

One of the most singular wines out there is the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Impériale. Made from 100% very old vine Grenache and aged in tank, it offers a sensational bouquet of spring flowers, peach pit, black raspberries, violets and mint. Full-bodied, unctuous and layered, with an enormous mid-palate, it has silky tannin, incredible depth and a great, great finish. This beauty just glides across the palate and has another decade or more of prime drinking. (JD)

The 2007 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah, Cinsault, and Carignan. It shows the beautiful aromatics of the vintage with perfumed notes of ripe cherry and raspberry fruits, toasted spice, licorice, and garrigue. Medium bodied with a smooth, polished texture, good acidity, and sweet tannin on the finish, this should drink beautifully over the next 10 to 12 years.

Glass-staining ruby. Powerful, youthfully brooding nose shows deep dark berry, kirsch, Indian spices and licorice. Weighty blackberry and cherry compote flavors are framed by gentle tannins and given lift by tangy minerality. Becomes fresher with air and finishes with excellent clarity and persistence. (JR) 92+
