Recognized by its red shield-shaped label, the Poggio San Polo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and nicely concentrated expression of Sangiovese. This wine shows proverbial meat on its bones with rich cherry and cassis, backed by cola, potting soil and balsam wood. The bouquet grows in intensity as the wine warms in the glass. The tannins are well integrated within the depth and length of the mouthfeel. Give this Brunello a few more years to flesh out and soften.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows dusty black cherries, offset by minty herbs, sweet, almost-exotic spices, and then grounded by a whiff of undergrowth. On the palate, soft textures pave the way for a savory expression of ripe red fruits, with subtle hints of spice and inner floral tones that mount toward the close. The finish is medium in length, resonating on savory fruits and herbs with a mineral twang. The 2015 San Polo is already quite easy to like, and I don’t see much reason to hold it for longer than a few years.

Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. A touch earthy and smoky on the nose while the fruit hesitates to come out. Backward on the palate too and a little muted but with hints of dried fruit on the finish, which might be an indication that its development has already begun. (WS)

The ripe red fruit here is so expressive and floral, featuring dried rose petals, hibiscus, poppies, dried strawberries and raspberries. It falls inwards on the palate, compressed and captivating, gathering rough-edged strands of tannins as it goes, threading them through an iron-fisted, central core of flavor and texture. Drink from 2025.
