Score 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2006

Good ruby-red. Strongly soil-inflected nose combines raspberry, brown spices, minerals and a hint of brown sugar. Velvety, rich and full, with a distinct dried fruit character and less flavor definition than the Echezeaux. This is more obviously 2003 in style and a bit heavyhanded for Musigny. Finishes with substantial tannins and an impression of alcoholic richness, but the alcohol here is still under 13%, according to Devillard. Vintage 2003 was perhaps not the easiest year to make truly fresh wines from tiny millerande grapes.

Tar and blackberries are found in the aromatic profile of the 2003 Musigny. A chewy medium-bodied wine, it exhibits outstanding concentration, depth, and length. Its personality, redolent of sweet black cherries and blackberries, is satin-textured, filled with ripe tannin, and expressive. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019.
