Ripe, dried cherry, balsamic-vinegar notes and spice. Fuller, denser palate than the Lecinquevigne, though with monumental, fine, but drying tannins. Smoky, slightly bitter, long finish. Not nearly ready. (TJ)

Pale-medium garnet. More brooding, earthy and spicy than the Lecinquevigne, with smoky tar and old leather, and a touch of dried rose petals over dried red cherry. Powerful, compact tannins – all the structure expected of classic Barolo – with spice and earth. Still tight. Long, but really closed. I think this will unwind into something really very good, but right now it ain’t giving much! (TJ)

The 2013 Barolo Cannubi is a powerful, heavy, over-extracted wine with zero personality and character. What is the point of having access to some of the best fruit in Cannubi and making a wine like this? This is an abomination of a wine that hurts Damilano and the reputation of every other quality-minded producer who makes a Cannubi Barolo.

The 2013 Barolo Cannubi is a layered and enriched expression that shows both elegance and power. This is a beautiful quality that is so specific to the celebrated Cannubi cru. The wine is silky and dense in texture and offers generous aromas of dark fruit, cassis, licorice and balsam herb. There is moist earth and some dustiness on the finish. The Barolo offers all of the most graceful aromatic highlights that you should expect of Nebbiolo. These qualities will improve with age.
