A mentholated burst of peppery wild herbs, crushed rocks, dried citrus rinds and blackberries defines the 2021 Syrah Sur Echalas Vineyard. This is savory to the core, with silken textures and red and black fruits that swirl throughout, complicated by hints of green olive and liquid stone. It finishes long and structured, wound youthfully tight, leaving resonant hints of exotic spice and lavender pastille. This is deceptively approachable, yet just a baby with depths of complexity today.

Lastly, the 2021 Syrah Sur Echalas Vineyard is cut from the same cloth, offering a slightly more meaty, spicy character in its red and black fruits as well as smoked meat, savory herbs, and leather. With medium to full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, plenty of tannins, and a great finish, it will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and evolve gracefully over the following 15+.

The 2021 Syrah Sur Echalas Vineyard opens with aromas of spiced black cherry, roasted espresso beans, savory herbs, turned earth and charred herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is ripe on the palate, with hints of mushroom and truffle before the fruit profile gracefully recedes. The focus then shifts to tertiary, earthy notions with soft notes of leather and baked clay. The wine concludes with a tannic grip and lingering ashy essence, showcasing a very mineral-driven and savory character. Oddly, the Grenache from the same vineyard acted similarly on the finish. Only 4,140 bottles made.

What a wild syrah, with such intensity on the nose. Bacon fat, ashtray, black pepper, black olives, celeriac and cumin. So smoky and delicious, it packs a punch while remaining fresh and poised, with a medium to full body. Long and attention-grabbing. Almost 80% whole clusters. From biodynamically grown grapes. Fantastic to try now, but best from 2027.
