Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Thibault’s Clos Vougeot 2011 displays quite conspicuous herbaceous qualities on the nose, although there is decent fruit there to back up that leaner style of wine. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins and pleasant red fruit infused with sous-bois notes, although the austere finish is not one you will remember. It does gain a modicum of weight in the glass, but not enough to have you rushing to your local merchant.

Bright, full red. Very closed nose hints at tobacco and pepper, plus a whiff of horseradish. Then surprisingly fruity, spicy and suave if a bit lacking in flesh, with the peppery quality carrying through in the middle palate. Finishes with subtle truffley earth tones and very good energy and lift. This needs time to express itself.

Bright, dark red-ruby. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, licorice and wild herbs, along with a smoky carbon suggestion. Densely packed and highly concentrated, with a firm tannic spine giving shape and definition to the fresh dark berry flavors. Plenty of stuffing here for balance but this very closed wine will probably need up to a decade of bottle aging to blossom.

Here too there is enough reduction to flatten the fruit so decanting is in order if you're tempted to try one soon. There is fine power and richness to the very solidly structured big-bodied flavors that possess outstanding volume before terminating in a long and quite intensely austere finish that delivers impressive length if only average plus depth.
