Tasting notes
The 2020 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru falls below my expectations from barrel, though it's by no means a poor showing. It begins well. It has a fresher bouquet than others, with lifted red cherry and wild strawberry scents. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. It's crisp with just a little heat on the back palate. Short on the finish, this is a Beaune that I would drink over the next five or six years. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Beaune Les Grèves 1er Cru has a much more cohesive and delineated bouquet than the Clos du Roi: vibrant and fresh with vivid red cherry and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with superb mineralité, wonderful tension and sense of energy. This year, there is a big difference between this and the Clos du Roi, a really quite wonderful Beaune. This is highly recommended.
