The 2008 Vosne-Romanee La Colombiere comes across as a touch rustic. Sweet scents of tobacco, forest floor and autumn leaves are some of the nuances that emerge from this mid-weight Burgundy. Palish red. High-pitched aromas of cherry, redcurrant and caramel oak; some slightly exotic notes add to its appeal. Juicy, brisk and sharply delineated, with spice and pepper notes lifting the somewhat lean middle palate. Not especially complex but finishes with very good length and freshness, along with a faint saline note. At this point in our tasting, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair compared 2008 to a blend of 2001 and 2000.
Good full red. Deep aromas of raspberry, smoke and earth. Sweet, supple and very ripe, with crunchy dark berries along with a chocolatey quality. Just enough acidity and sappiness here to hold its shape. Should make a rich village wine. (The Vosne-Romanee was also sweet, sappy and chocolatey but was too reduced to assess with confidence.)
Racked in Nov. Mid ruby. Notably light nose. Lots of acidity. Really fresh and only lightly treacly but pretty hard work. Needs a bit more flesh. (JR)
