2000 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate

The 2000 Barolo Brunate is a fabulous, explosive wine. Still impossibly young and vigorous, it shows remarkable intensity and power. Sweet, balsamic notes develop in the glass, lending further notes of darkness and seductiveness. This is a beautiful, centered Brunate that is sure to provide fabulous drinking for another two decades.

As I have noted previously, the 2000 vintage offers wines that are amazingly open at this stage in their youths and most of these Brunate Barolos can be enjoyed today, although some wines may require more oxygenation. The wines were tasted blind and are listed in the order tasted. 2000 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate—Deep dark ruby. Displays an intriguing nose redolent of toasted oak, roasted coffee beans, licorice, and tar which are complemented by flavors of very ripe yet backward fruit and minerals with a very soft and plush mouthfeel. Very good overall balance.

Medium red. Redcurrant liqueur, smoke and nutty oak on the superripe nose, with an intriguing iron-like element. Very sweet and suave in the mouth, conveying a more layered impression than La Serra. Flavors of red fruits, minerals and flowers seem more clearly delineated. Finishes with big but ripe tannins and very good length.
