Tasted blind, the 2011 Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard was demonstrating a small reduction on the nose although nothing that will not dissipate with time in bottle or a good rough decant. There is certainly fine mineral tension here, more so than Dominique Lafon's 2011 Montrachet that we also poured blind in the same flight. The palate is lively and energetic with a fine bead of acidity. It is nicely poised with a hint of nutmeg and walnut towards the vibrant and classy finish. This is showing impressively and it comes highly recommended—if you can locate a bottle of course. Tasted October 2016.

Flowers, butter, pastry and vanillin are all woven together in the 2011 Montrachet. Subtle, layered and very pretty, the 2011 is another wine with lovely balance. Readers won't find Montrachet explosiveness in this 2011, but rather an attractive, expressive Burgundy that is best enjoyed over the next handful of years.

This beauty possesses the most complex aromatic profile in the range with its broad ranging nose of citrus zest, white flowers, yellow orchard fruit, fennel and spice nuances. The silky yet muscular flavors display imposing size and weight with excellent mid-palate concentration and plenty of minerality on the balanced, driving and almost painfully intense finish. This is a big wine by any standard but particularly so in the context of the 2011 vintage. Plenty of patience will be required but it should be well worth the wait. Tasted: Jun 11, 2013.
