The 1966 Rauzan-Ségla might well be the best of what was a rather sorry decade for this Margaux Second Growth. The bouquet gently unfolds in the glass with cedar, tobacco and hints of charcoal, bestowed more fruit than the 1970. The palate is quite elegant and pretty – unusual for a Rauzan-Ségla of this era, with a slightly ferrous finish. If you desire a mature Rauzan-Ségla then I would consider the 1966 over other vintages. Tasted at the Bipin Desai vertical at Taillevent.

Similar in style to the 1970, only more austere and not quite as concentrated, the 1966 has a ripe plummy, oaky fragrance of moderate intensity, and graceful, yet still tough and firm flavors. Drinkable now, this fully mature wine will hold for 1 to 2 more years. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 4/79.

The Chanel group purchased Margaux Second Growth Ch. Rauzan-Ségla in 1994. Under the iconic fashion house’s ownership and – since 2014 – the guidance of winemaker Nicolas Audebert, the estate has seen significant investment and rapidly become one of Bordeaux’s most desirable.
