Palish ruby with broad, watery orange rim. Brooding, concentrated and a bit perfumed with notes of mulch. Energetic acidity that melts into the fruit. Grainy tannins on the finish. Something for burgundy lovers, not those looking for power. (WS)

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V. presents a distinctly wild, savory profile typical of this high-altitude site near the center of town. Sage, mint, smoke, rosemary and sweet red cherries gradually open up in the glass. The 2010 is going to need a few years to fully come together, as it is a bit compact. Still, it is impressive, there is no doubt about that. This fruit was harvested on October 21 and 22, very much on the late side, even for the year.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V. shows a masculine personality next to the estate's other Brunello wines. Dried fruit and dark cherry are followed by leather, spice, tobacco and pressed rose petal. The wine is also redolent of savory tones including bresaola, smoked ham and crushed white pepper. Silky tannins segue to fresh acidity and long persistency. This Brunello shows a greater degree of evolution and will perform nicely in the medium and long term.

Mid ruby with orange tinges. Brooding and deep nose of sweet cherry, dark earth and licorice. Same finely structured palate as the straight Brunello, yet with more oomph and complexity as well as firm tannins added on. Almost a little racy on the finish, like this is from a high altitude vineyard. Long and brooding and not ready by far. (WS)
