The 2004 Echézeaux Grand Cru from Mugneret-Gibourg has pleasant red currant, maraschino cherry, iron filing and potent undergrowth/mulch aromas that gain a little intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins that frame the simple tart red fruit. There is a touch of bitter cherry here, as well as conspicuous undergrowth and woodland aromas, plus a pinch of black and red peppercorns on the finish. Not bad at all, although I would not leave this too long. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London.

Mid ruby with a pale rim. Light nose seems to promise delicacy. And indeed this is delivered in a rather ethereal cloud reminiscent of violet cachous. No excess acidity though a hint of hard candy even here. Lots of juice and charm. Certainly not rich but a skilful, well-balanced 2004, though without the depth of most grands crus. Lingers in the glass with a rather menthol note. (JR)

Good full red. Distinctly darker fruit aromas than the Ruchottes; more smoke and earth and less flowers showing today. Densely packed but quite unevolved, even a bit imploded, with its peppery side currently overshadowing its shy fruit. This boasts very good lift, but finishes with slightly drying tannins. Extremely closed and in need of several years of aging.
