The 2003 Echézeaux Grand Cru from Mugneret-Gibourg has a ripe but slightly volatile bouquet with prunes and dates that obscure the essence of this vineyard. The palate is very sweet on the entry, featuring candied red fruit laced with orange zest. Displaying modest depth, gentle grip and a lightly spiced finish, the palate is actually far superior to the aromatics, yet still pales next to countless other vintages from this producer. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London.

Mid garnet. Aromatic, rather unusual for a 2003. Nicely balanced! Juice and freshness. Grainy and fun, with lift and no excess of anything, just slightly riper fruit than usual. Very clean, long finish. Well done, ladies! (JR)

Poured from a magnum directly, the 2003 Echézeaux Grand Cru from Mugneret-Gibourg reflects the tumult of that hot season. It has a gregarious bouquet with raisin, cassis and blackberry cloaked in glycerin. It is attractive, albeit not reflective of the refined aromatics that would distinguish a cooler season. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and commendable acidity. Copious kirsch and crushed strawberry notes, with a sweet and seductive blood orange seam throughout. And yet it is missing some tension on the pastille-like finish, thus depriving it of the intellect other vintages would show. Enjoy this over the next 5 or 6 years.

Deep, bright red. Redcurrant, iron, tobacco and minerals on the nose. Offers a nicely restrained sweetness in the mouth, thanks to good firming acidity. But this very rich, spicy wine builds impressively toward the back. This began a bit soft, noted Marie-Christine, but now seems more solid. The wine's sizable tannic structure, she believes, stands in for the low acidity.
