Drink 0-0, Neal Martin, Oct 2019

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a lot of reduction on the nose that occludes the fruit profile and any semblance of terroir expression for the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, quite confit-like in style with bitter dark cherry and apricot notes towards the finish. More winemaking than wine - I hope that changes with bottle age. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Bright ruby-red. Alluring aromas and flavors of black raspberry, cocoa powder and violet, lifted by a peppery note. Wonderfully sappy, spicy, fleshy and deep, with perfectly integrated acidity giving the middle palate a light touch. An exhilarating note of blood orange adds further lift to this very sexy wine. This one could go into a time capsule. The crop level here was just 26 hectoliters per hectare, as some vines situated in a slight dip in the hillside were affected by frost.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has a well-defined bouquet with a little more opulence than fellow Suchots encountered from other growers, with scents of black cherries, peppermint and a touch of raspberry preserve developing with time. The palate is very well proportioned with good density, weighty in the mouth, quite savory (again) toward the finish with a tang of blood orange. Not bad at all, although I have a preference for the 2015 last year.

100% new oak. Barrel sample. Very deep purple. Sweetly vibrant. With so much energy and lifted limestone. Very transparent and healthy and great ‘minerality’. Real drive and beautiful tension between silky tannins and flavour. Slight saltiness. (JR)
