Tasting notes
Lorenzo Accomasso's 2010 Barolo is a beautiful wine that is worth tracking down, although chances are you won't find it. I can't begin to describe what I went through to get this bottle to taste for review (including a very folkloric sit-down with Mr. Accomasso in his disheveled front office, after which, by the way, I have no idea what I really tasted). I ask for your understanding in advance if reviews are not readily available for future new releases. I'm not sure I have the stamina to jump though all those hoops each and every year. This review is based on a bottle I purchased from the enoteca in La Morra. The wine opens to a deep ruby color with soft, yielding tones of cherry, dried blackberry and plum. It shows a slow bottle evolution with primary fruit that is still intact and bright. No one is allowed to see the Accomasso winery (believe me, I tried). With broken tractors and free-range chickens outside the door, you have to wonder how he does it. People I have spoken to claim that some past vintages show Brettanomyces. Make no mistake, this beautiful wine from 2010 is pristine and beautifully clean. The wine is more immediate in approach, so you can drink it in the near term, or wait longer so it completes its evolution. There is a lot of natural fruit fiber here that will undoubtedly add to the wine's complexity as it completes its various transitions. I will note, however, that the wine does evolve quickly once the cork is pulled from the bottle.

About the producer

The Accomasso name is the stuff of legend. A one-man operation, this tiny property in La Morra has developed a cult following. Now in his 90s, Lorenzo Accomasso’s Barolos are ultra-traditional, made with minimal intervention and rudimentary equipment – prized by a loyal and dedicated following.
