Score 92+/100 · Drink 2026-2042, Neal Martin, Sep 2024

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a refined bouquet that unfolds in the glass, with delineated raspberry and cranberry fruit and a hint of Earl Grey in the background. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, rounded, dense and weighty for a Premier Cru, although it doesn't quite have the tension or nuance of the best. The finish feels a little heavy-handed with the oak, although that should be subsumed with time. It misses a bit of flair, hence my lower score, but it should improve with bottle age, hence the plus sign. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Aromas of red berries, plums, rose petals, sweet spices and forest floor introduce the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless wine that's layered and concentrated, with a vibrant core of fruit and a long, penetrating finish.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru contains 30% whole bunch with 50% new oak. It has a vibrant, tightly wound bouquet with wet limestone/petrichor scents complementing the shimmering black cherry and orange zest scents. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins, fine acidity, veering more towards the red fruit profile with a pinch of brown spices on the finish. Long in the mouth, very classy.
