Owner Brion Wise has tapped Mark Herold to make the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Caldwell Vineyard, a terrific example of Coombsville terroir. It's cool and slightly mentholated on the nose, with the fruity core driven by black cherries and cassis, just gently tinged with hints of dried sage. Medium to full-bodied, it's firmly structured on the palate without coming across as overly muscular or bulky, easing into a long, mouthwatering finish. Give it a few years in the cellar and enjoy it over the next two decades.

Full bottle 1,489 g. Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 21 months in French oak, 80% new. 229 cases produced. Concentrated blackish purple. Heady and voluptuous start and then drying, grainy tannins and some marked acidity. Quite long. Not quite ready. But refreshing enough. (JR)

Coming from the Coombsville Appellation, in the cooler, southern part of the valley, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Caldwell Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that was raised 21 months in 80% new barrels. It has a terrific, blue-fruited character as well as ample leafy herbs, tobacco, damp earth, and sappy flower-like aromatics. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated yet elegant Cabernet that has a lively spine of freshness, a soft, supple mouthfeel, and velvety tannins. It's one of the more approachable forward wines in the lineup but it nevertheless brings plenty of underlying structure and depth. My money is on it evolving gracefully for at least two decades.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Caldwell Vineyard is laced with an exotic mélange of inky dark fruit, crushed rock, mint, lavender and dried herbs. Potent and driving in feel, with tremendous persistence, the Caldwell is wonderfully vibrant and saline, especially for such a big wine.
