Same meaty note as Léoville-Barton but more spice, then drier on the palate. Less fruit depth than the Léoville but quite persistent. (JH)
Another sleeper of the vintage from this somewhat under the radar step-child of Anthony Barton’s more famous Leoville Barton, the 2004 Langoa Barton exhibits deep, concentrated, chunky, black currant and cherry fruit intermixed with notions of forest floor and aged beef blood. This impressive, full-bodied, powerful, ageworthy St.-Julien is atypically backward and brooding. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+.
Aromas of redcurrant, mocha, leather and game. A juicy, nicely balanced midweight, with complex flavors of red cherry, currant, minerals, leather and flowers. Finishes with firm but fairly light tannins and good length. This will offer early appeal.
About the producer
Hugh Barton purchased this estate, alongside Second Growth Ch. Léoville Barton, in the 1820s. Classified as a Third Growth and run by Lilian Barton with her children Damien and Mélanie today, the 20 hectares of vines produce some of the appellation’s most elegant wines – and at reasonable prices.
