Score 97/100 · Drink 2025-2045, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2025

Grown in calcareous chalky soils with 65-year-old vines, the 2021 Barbaresco Serraboella went through 20 days of fermentation and was aged in 80% Slavonian cask and the rest 500-liter French tonneau. A jeweled ruby/red color, it’s a more serious and contemplative wine that opens in the glass with notes of cedar and leather before revealing more pure notes of raspberry liqueur, pressed flowers, and sweet herbs. The structure is noble and ripe, with a good, compact feel, more depth and broader tannins, as well as a mineral feel with a pleasing saltiness and even acidity. A lovely wine, it needs time but is going to drink well over the coming 20 or more years.

The 2021 Barbaresco Serraboella is elegant, deep and beautifully polished, its recent bottling notwithstanding. Dark-fleshed fruit, incense, new leather, licorice, mocha and a touch of small-oak sweetness all build with a bit of coaxing. Young tannins are a bit forbidding at this stage. Readers will have to be patient. There's gorgeous depth and intensity here.
