Score 16/20 · Drink 2008-2020, Jancis Robinson MW, Sep 2009

Harvest date 28 Sep-13 Oct; yield 60.1 hl/ha; vineyard area 33.14 ha Bright crimson. Thick and sweet on the nose. The tannins are a little severe – the four-square 1988 spirit! I can't see this wine ever being truly succulent, but then it might surprise just like the 1975. My suggested drinking dates give it the benefit of the doubt. (JR)

The 1988 Sociando-Mallet is medium-bodied, somewhat lighter than one might expect, but concentrated and spicy, with a sense of balance. It should last for 12-15 years.
