The 2000 Malartic-Lagravière comprises a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It is a wine that I have only encountered once back in 2004. It has a ripe blackberry, raspberry coulis and gravel-scented bouquet that opens with a sense of confidence in the glass with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a little meaty in style with a savory, truffle-tinged finish that just needs more depth. But this has flair and should offer another decade of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Malartic-Lagravière.

Black cherry, cassis, the fruit seems quite baked. Finishes with a strong bitter juniper note. Less interesting and complex than their 2001. Charming and classic, with a tight, restrained character that has more than a touch of austerity in its structure. (RH)

Mellow. Round. Already almost broachable already! Lots of ripe fruit and tannin. (JR)
