The 2000 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru is drinking exquisitely today, offering up an ethereal and pure bouquet of sweet red berries, orange zest, rose petals and exotic spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and weightless palate with an enveloping core of cool, perfumed fruit framed by ripe acids and melting tannins, and concluding with a long, perfumed, mouthwateringly saline finish. This vintage from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is in a great place today, delivering more pleasure and complexity than a number of years that were more highly touted on release.

One of the wines from a warm vintage that produced wines for early drinking. This is rather seamless in texture and endless in the mouth. Ruby color with a garnet edge. Aromas of hibiscus tea, dried strawberry, candied strawberry, and orange peel. It’s full-bodied and tight and fine tannined. Drink and enjoy but it will be in this condition for a long time.

The 2000 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru is a vintage that I have not tasted since just after bottling. It was picked on September 22 at 29hl/ha. I notice quite a deep colour compared to other vintages and perhaps just a little more turbidity. It is initially broody, a wine that does not want to get to know you. It begins to open with quite potent undergrowth scents intermixed with a pencil shavings or antique bureau. It is well balanced and seems to convey a little sinew, though it seems to fall short on the aftertaste when compared directly against the 1999 and 2002 Romanée-Conti. 6,286 bottles produced. Tasted at the Romanée-Conti dinner at the Connaught Hotel.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or simply “DRC” is without doubt the most famous domaine in Burgundy and one of the most famous producers on earth. The Grand Cru vineyard from which it takes its name produces the world’s most expensive wine by a long margin.
