The Mugneret-Gibourg 2015 Echezeaux Grand Cru opens in the glass with a complex bouquet of black raspberry, plum, bitter chocolate, bonfire and spicy notes framed by a judicious application of new oak. On the palate, the wine is velvety, full-bodied and ample, with an expansive attack, a deep core of cool fruit and beautifully refined, detailed tannins. This hails from two parcels—one in the lieu-dit of Les Quartiers de Nuits (which the sisters say contributes "black fruit" and a certain textural "rondeur"), the other in Les Rouges du Bas (which lends "minerality and precision").

(55% new oak; from Les Rouges du Bas and Les Quartiers de Nuits): Bright medium ruby. Very pure but subtle and shy on the nose, exuding scents of blackberry, dark cherry, violet and dark chocolate accented by orange zest. Offers an exhilarating balance of almost chocolatey sweetness and penetrating acidity. Finishes very long and primary, even a bit inky, with suave tannins and firm acidity. Marie-Christine Mugneret noted that new oak really marks the delicate Echézeaux character, but this wine has the stuffing to support its lumber.

The Echezeaux is another beauty – made from the two climats – Rouges du Bas (a plot just above Echezeaux du Dessus, and a plot in Les Quartiers de Nuits. The nose is offering a lovely almost floral expression of red and darker fruits brought forward by a quite intense mineral note. On the palate lovely balance and length – beautiful juicy mid-palate fruit – focused by a fine slightly stony minerality – presumably from the Rouges du Bas plot. Love the energy in this wine .. just confirm that at least some parts of Echezeaux produced some truly magnificent wines in 2015. Jun 2016, www.winehog.org, Drink: 2031+
