Tasting notes
Murky deep red. Idiosyncratic aromas of singed sour cherry, woodsmoke and game, with a suggestion of rhubarb; smells like a clafoutis just out of the oven. Nervy, high-acid flavors of red berries and sour cherry, with a light overlay of caramelization. Finishes with dusty tannins and distinctly edgy tannins. This singular pinot, from vines planted on blue clay, really needs decanting. "Nineteen ninety-four was a great vintage for both chardonnay and pinot," notes Terry Leighton. Recommended for adventuresome tasters.

Medium red. Knockout nose combines musky raspberry, strawberry, mint, spices, game and underbrush, all lifted by a whiff of rose petal. Then intensely flavored and strong in mineral extract but distinctly hard-edged in the mouth, in need of more sweetness. In light of the fact that this wine is already ten years old, it's hard to believe that its slight sour edge will ever disappear.
