Score 92/100 · Drink 2009-2021, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, Dec 2006

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino, which sees only cask, presents a very dark color along with more classic profile in its expressive nose and nuances of tobacco, sweet cherries, tar and minerals. Although it, too, shows excellent concentration and balance today, it comes across more austere and structured than the Altero. That said, my impression is that it will ultimately develop into a Brunello of greater complexity, depth and nuance. A day after opening it had blossomed into a splendid Brunello. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900.

Good deep red-ruby. Complex nose offers dark berries, minerals, licorice, mocha and bonfire, plus a suggestion of exotic fruits. Suave and lush but high-pitched and fresh, with sexy, juicy dark berry flavors and a hint of gamey reduction. This really expands in the mouth with air. Finishes firmly tannic and very long, with a leathery nuance. Offers a near-perfect balance of acids and tannins.
