(One-third each grenache, syrah and mourvèdre): Inky ruby with a bright rim. Seductive bouquet of red and dark berry preserves, olive, potpourri and smoky minerals. Sweet, expansive black raspberry and cherry flavors are complemented by floral pastille and spice cake qualities, with silky tannins adding support. Punches way above its appellation, finishing with excellent depth, clarity and spiciness.

A blend of equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre that sees 9 months in oak (5% new), the 2007 Henri de Lanzac Côtes du Rhône Clos de l'Hermitage possesses rich, black and purple fruit aromas that are intermixed with raw meat, vanilla, graphite, spice and earth. The palate is medium to full bodied and has notable density, concentrated and rich fruit that carries into the long finish. This beauty has solid structure, plenty of precision and ripe tannin on the long finish.

Even though the 2007 Cotes du Rhone Clos de l’Hermitage is over the $25 limit for this value report, I have included it because it is such a remarkable wine, and even at $30 a bottle, it represents a fabulous bargain. Made from 40-year-old vines, it is an equal part blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. Its opaque purple color is followed by a bouquet that smells more like a Cote Rotie than a Cotes du Rhone. Flowery notes intermixed with tapenade, ground pepper, roasted meats, and copious black cherry and blackberry fruit soar from the glass. The wine possesses fabulous density, a rich, full-bodied style, and present, but sweet tannin. It should drink gorgeously for 10-12 years, perhaps longer.
