Tasting notes
The 2000 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Selezione Giuseppe Quintarelli is a selection that spent an additional two years in cask than the straight 2000 Amarone. Dusty red cherries, mint, crushed flowers and licorice are some of notes that are woven together in this delicate Amarone. The Giuseppe Quintarelli comes across as a touch forward, with slightly oxidative aromas and flavors from the extended time in barrel. As good as this is, in 2000 I prefer the straight Amarone. My sense is that the fruit will begin drying out here over the next few years.

Giuseppe Quintarelli's passing earlier this year left a huge void in the wine world that isn't likely to ever be filled. Veneto is a fascinating region with tons of untapped potential, yet only one or two other producers have managed to make hypnotic, life-changing wines such as those that are found in these tiny cramped cellars in Negrar. At their best, Quintarelli's wines had no equal. I only hope the estate continues the tradition of making these idiosyncratic, compelling wines.
