Despite its modern (a. k. a. “international”) blueprint, the single-vineyard 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Campo del Drago mirrors many of the personality traits that ground it to the unique territory of Montalcino. Fruit tones of dried cherry and black currant show a beating pulse, and the wine is nicely layered with balsam notes, underbrush and crushed flowers. The bright intensity of its color is also worth noting as is the smooth silkiness of the palate. Campo del Drago is worth giving a second visit. Drink: 2014-2024.

Medium ruby. Deep aromas of black raspberry, tar, mocha, minerals and exotic oak. Thick and youthfully backward, with a sweet flavor of boysenberry enlivened by integrated acidity. A sweet but serious Brunello that's considerably tighter today than the estate's regular release and really calls for seven or eight years of additional bottle aging. Finishes very long, with a mineral character and substantial tannins that dust the front teeth.
