Another perfect wine, the 2013 Fortification is darker and more inward compared to the 2012, with a smoky nose of ripe blackcurrants, plums, dark chocolate, sandalwood, and exotic spices, with a kiss of crushed mint as well. Straight-up massive on the palate, this full-bodied behemoth somehow manages to stay flawlessly balanced and light on its feet while carrying ripe, broad tannins, a dense, powerful mid-palate, and a great finish. It's in a very different style compared to the 2012, yet I find them both to be as compelling as fortified wine can be. Both are 50- to 60-year wines.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2013 Fortification explodes with incredibly pure notes of blackcurrant cordial, baked plums, raspberry preserves, chocolate-covered cherries and dried mulberries with touches of preserved mandarin peel, cloves, espresso and Indian spices. Full-bodied, oh-so-rich and oh-so-decadent, the palate delivers layer upon layer of bramble fruit compote, exotic spices and savory flavors, all framed by firm yet beautifully plush tannins and finishing epically long. Amazing!
