Even better is the brilliant 2008 Pinot Noir Lindsay Estate (the home vineyard for Paul Hobbs that is planted with an assortment of clones such as the Calera and Swan California selections as well as the Pommard clone). It exhibits copious aromas of black currants, black cherries, raspberries, underbrush and spring flowers as well as a dense, full-bodied mouthfeel and a multilayered texture. This dazzling Pinot Noir can be enjoyed over the next decade. The irrepressible Paul Hobbs fashioned a beautiful portfolio of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in both 2008 and 2009. His style of Chardonnay comes directly from the Burgundy handbook, meaning cool vineyard sites, full malolactic fermentations, lots of lees contact and the use of well-established clones, such as the old Wente and occasionally some of the newer Dijon clones. Vivid ruby. An intensely perfumed, exotic bouquet of red and dark berry preserves, incense, cinnamon and gingerbread. Juicy raspberry and boysenberry flavors provide excellent palate coverage and become spicier with aeration. Extremely suave pinot with a long, sappy, sweet finish that echoes the floral note.

Paul Hobbs is one of California wine’s biggest names. Twice named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker, he joined Robert Mondavi in 1977, worked at Opus One and Simi before setting up his eponymous winery in 1991.
