Pine shavings and rubbed sage give way to black currants and blood orange hints as the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Lopai evolves in the glass. This is racy and lifted in feel, with silken textures. Juicy acidity energizes ripe wild berry fruits as fine-grained tannins amass toward the close. The Lopai reveals its structure and minerality through the finish, which is impossibly long and staining with a primary concentration that lingers on and on. This is classic to the core and has a lovely balance that I find wildly attractive.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Chalk Block is blended with 7% Malbec and matured for 20 months in 60% new French oak. It has a nose of maraschino cherry with accents of dried herbs and vanilla. The medium-bodied palate has youthfully coiled, spicy flavors, powdery tannins, rounded acidity and an elegant finish. It will benefit from 2-3 years in bottle. 275 cases were made.

83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, 2% Petite Sirah, 1% Syrah. Aged 20 months in 55% new and 45% neutral 225-litre French oak. RS 0.81 g/l. 27,500 cases produced. Tasted blind. Deep opaque purple. Blackberry jam but with a cooling minty greenness to the nose. Sweet black fruit – cassis and blackberry on the palate. High but supple tannin. This needs time. (SCJ)

Attractive aromas of blackcurrants, dark cherries, crushed walnuts and chocolate, together with subtle notes of cedar and bark. Full-bodied, structured and solid on the palate with very fine, linear tannins. Despite its richness, it remains refined and delicate with a silky, lingering finish. Drink or hold.
