Tasting notes
Good dark red. Highly complex aromas of redcurrant, pepper, cola, mocha, smoke and minerals. Quite taut and backward on the palate, with a medicinal quality to the flavors of red and darker berries, mint, cola and flowers. Finishes with a powerful spine of acids, minerals and tannins and outstanding subtle, building length. This seems much more closed following the bottling than it did from barrel a year ago but may very well merit a higher score with a decade in the cellar.

The 2010 Mazis-Chambertin inhabits a whole other plane after the Griotte. It is an explosive, intense wine bursting at the seams with fruit. Black cherries, licorice, violets and spices wrap around the palate in this sensual, totally alluring wine. The Mazis is a showstopper. Wow!

It is always fascinating to settle in for a tasting with proprietor Mounir Saouma. With the exception of Jadot, I can't think of a single maison that draws across such a broad range of top vineyards. When taken together, the whites and reds provide insight to the performance of dozens of the finest sites in the region. Saouma is not much for comparisons when discussing 2010, saying quite simply, -2010 is 2010.- The vintage was not without some disappointments. Because of the miniscule yields, there is no 2010 Romanee St. Vivant or Richebourg. As always, these are some of the most unmanipulated wines being made in Burgundy. When I tasted the 2010s in November 2011, the wines had never been sulphured or racked. Saouma had just finished bottling his 2009s (a vintage many bottled on the early side) in October 2011! Good red-ruby color. Vibrant, perfumed aromas of black raspberry and smoked meat. Dense, highly concentrated and utterly seamless, with terrific inner-mouth energy giving the wine lift and extending its finish. This has the balance to provide early accessibility but the medicinal reserve and noble tannins to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle. Very classy, long Mazis.
