Aromas of sweet berries, cherries, woodsmoke and soil introduce the 2019 Bourgogne Pinot Noir, a medium-bodied, velvety wine with a pretty core of fruit, framed by powdery tannins. It's more elegant than the blockier, more introverted 2018.

The 2019 Bourgogne Rouge comes from young vines planted by Clerget just four years ago close to Volnay Santenots. Completely de-stemmed, it has a fragrant crushed strawberry scented bouquet. The palate is nicely balanced with a touch of sour cherry on the entry, fine weight with a sweet, grainy-textured finish. Delicious.

Bottom of Volnay. Just three barrels and no new oak. Cask sample. Raspberry-juice nose. Juicy and fruity if a little simple. Quite a charmer though. (JR)
