The 2016 Barolo Cannubi shows all of the raciness of this site to great effect. Crushed flowers, mint, spice and red berry fruit fill out the layers as this pliant, silky Barolo shows off its considerable allure. Soft edges (for a young Barolo) give the Cannubi notable immediacy and tons of sheer appeal. The Cannubi is a wine of pure pleasure.

Barolo. Tasted blind. Mid ruby with bricky rim. Shy earthy cherry nose with hints of savoury spice. Supple acidity and finely chiselled tannins, but the fruit closes up fast. Its Cannubi pedigree is evident, though. (WS)

The Francesco Rinaldi & Figli 2016 Barolo Cannubi offers a complete and definitive portrait of this storied vineyard site at the heart of the Barolo comune, or village. One of the big takeaways here is the mouthfeel. This wine shows an enormously silky and pure approach that hits the palate with clarity and purity. Subtle hints of wild rose, raspberry, crushed stone, licorice and dried mint appear along the way. This is a supremely elegant and finely textured wine.

The 2016 Barolo Cannubi brings together all the best elements of the year with the natural pedigree of this site. Fresh and vibrant in the glass, with terrific underlying structure, the Cannubi is a Barolo of captivating aromatic intensity and drive that is shaping up to be a real beauty. In 2016, hail was a factor. The estate opted to use some of the affected fruit in the straight Barolo, which then had the effect of lowering production for the single vineyard wine by about 30%. As for the wine itself, well, it is pretty stellar.
