Score 97/100 · Drink 2028-2038, Eric Guido, Vinous, Feb 2026

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a dark and radiant beauty, smoldering with a beguiling blend of crushed plums and black cherries offset by notes of tobacco, dried orange peels and hints of freshly snipped rosemary. It displays velvety textures supported by brisk acidity, creating a sense of density without weight as polished red and black fruits glide across the palate with ease. A tinge of dark chocolate adds a pleasantly bitter edge toward the close. Still structured with adolescent tannins, the 2006 finishes with extreme length and tension, leaving a subtle nuance of mint to linger. It is a stunning representation of the vintage and is getting even better with maturity. Anyone with the 2006 Riserva in their cellar should be smiling from ear to ear.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva slowly rises up from the glass. Swirling brings forward an array of exotic spices, dried strawberries, cloves and hints of fresh mint. It mixes sweet and salty, packed full of vibrantly ripe fruit, yet also mineral to the core, with a jolt of tantalizing acidity that provides lift and energy. The 2006 leaves a tinge of sour citrus and balsamic tones that pucker the cheeks, finishing youthfully tense and gently tannic. This can be enjoyed today or cellared for another decade or more. It's a drop-dead gorgeous Brunello Riserva.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is more reserved and moodier than the 2007 placed beside it, as crushed stone minerality gives way to more black than red fruits, as well as lavender. It's soft, fleshy yet somehow lifted in feel, coming across as incredibly pure and almost salty in nature, washing notes of plum and savory herbs across the palate, all carried by a core of brisk acidity. At times, the 2006 reminds me more of food than wine. Cherry pits and grippy tannins resonate throughout the finale. There's a dark, animal nature here that keeps you coming back for more. It’s simply stunning today, but it has many years of positive evolution in store.

Concentrated ruby with orange. Subdued hints of fine fresh fruit. Lively and with real concentration and elegance. Mouthwatering ripe fruit with fine powdery tannin, goes on and on. Very young but hard to resist. (WS)
