Bright violet. Heady aromas of fresh, spice-accented red and dark berries, potpourri, olive and incense, along with a smoky topnote. Sweet and seamless in texture, offering sweet, palate-staining black raspberry, violet pastille and spicecake flavors firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. Supple tannins build slowly on the strikingly long, incisive finish, which leaves behind notes of candied red fruit, cracked pepper and violet.

There are under 200 cases of the 2014 Côte Rôtie Reserve, which got all the grapes that would normally go into the Lancement and Belle Helene cuvées. Its deep ruby color is followed by a layered, complex, medium-bodied and nicely concentrated red that has terrific notes of dried flowers, blackcurrants, blackberries, black olives and Asian spices. Its tannin quality it first rate, and this classic 2014 has both elegance and richness. Drink it anytime over the coming decade or more.

Dark purple. Potent smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of dark berry preserves, cherry liqueur and pungent flowers take on a hint of peppery spices. Spicy and taut on entry, then round and vibrant in the mid-palate, offering concentrated black raspberry, cola and violet pastille flavors given lift and spine by juicy acidity. Finishes bright, minerally and very long, displaying harmonious tannins and resonating floral and dark berry notes.

Certain parcels that went into Réserve in 2013 ended up in the Village in 2014. He may bottle this early in 2016 because of the character of the vintage. High toned and peppery – a bit more like classic Côte Rôtie on the nose than the super-fruity Village blend. Stricter. (JR)
