Score 98/100 · Robert Parker, Feb 2000

The opaque black/blue-colored 1998 Shiraz displays a fascinating bouquet of violets, black raspberry and blackberry liqueur, cedar, fruitcake, and pepper. Surreal levels of glycerin and richness are present in this full-bodied, surprisingly supple-textured wine. The finish lasts for several minutes. This is a tour de force winemaking effort, and it performed better from the bottle opened forty-eight hours prior to the tasting. This is an exceptional wine from an Australian genius! Saturated ruby. Bound-up aromas of blackberry, black licorice, shoe polish and mint. Painfully intense and powerfully structured, but currently hard-edged and brooding. Flavors of licorice and shoe polish currently dominate. Finishes with powerful tannins and superb length. A huge, muscular wine that will almost certainly merit a higher score with a few years of additional bottle aging. This seems rather powerfully extracted, like the '97, but here the vintage has provided stronger raw material.
