Gilles Barge’s new cuvée from a dizzyingly steep vineyard to the south of Côte Rôtie that is approached by a miniature monorail. Mid cherry red. Lovely floral scent entwined with peppery Syrah fragrance and just a touch of oak sweetness. Succulent and sweet-fruited on the palate. Elegant texture – powder-fine tannins. (JH)

Syrah/Viognier, 24 months in French oak barrique. Gneiss and mica-based schist. Interesting savoury, leathery aromas. Lots of life and energy here but just the merest hint of greenness and something animal too. Needs time. (JR)
