Tasting notes
Their 0.74-ha parcel traverses the cru from E to W. Mainly clay soils. 50% whole bunch. Maximum 20% new oak. Sweet red cherry. Delicate but complex with a touch of spice but it seems to be fruit spice not oak spice, since there’s no more than 20% new oak here, and it is hidden behind the fruit. A hint of exoticism. There’s a creaminess, really seductive. Multilayered even now. Succulent, fine-grained, elegant but with lots of fruit even if it all about harmony not about fruit. Delicate beauty, the tannins offering just enough friction to slow the wine across the palate. Such flavour and delicacy combined is quite an achievement. (JH)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru comes from the middle of a vineyard that traverses from top to bottom of the incline; this vintage contains around 50% whole bunches. It has a gorgeous bouquet with red currant, cranberry and light mineral notes, hints of bergamot and vervain tea emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannin, fine acidity and quite an insistent grip. The salinity floods through this Vosne-Romanée on the finish. Superb.
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes offers up pretty aromas of rose petals, cherries, dried flowers and cinnamon, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate, with firm, chewy structuring tannins that were rather prominent when I tasted the wine. Let's see how it shows from the bottle.
