The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques possesses immense potential. Offering up notes of cassis, peonies, blood orange, smoked meats and coniferous forest floor, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with amazing intensity without weight, exquisitely refined structuring tannins, concluding with an unremittingly long and pungently perfumed finish. The inherent charm of the 2017 vintage makes this an especially graceful Lavaux Saint-Jacques, without diminishing any of this cuvée's capacity to age, and patience will be richly rewarded.

Since the Lavaux Saint-Jacques had just been racked, this cru was not tasted during my visit.

I am the first to taste this, apparently. Very late racking in September because of very late malo. 66% new oak and 75% stems. South facing so sunny but retains freshness because of the slope and the elevation. Wild, small-berried dark fruit entwined with oaky char and oak’s sweet spice. Toasty on the palate, the tannins are very fine in texture. The oak dominates at the moment but you can sense the harmony that will come. Lovely freshness on the long toasty yet cool finish. (JH)
