Score 95/100 · Drink 2030-2050, Angus Hughson, Vinous, May 2026

The 1996 Shiraz Mount Edelstone is multi-layered—a fleshy, ripe core of cherry and blackberry meets a strong line of florals and spice. The palate displays impressive weight and fruit density to follow, again with a spicy kick, while deep-set tannins support the long, strong and mineral-scented finish. This is youthful, tight and very impressive.

Looks more evolved than the 1995. Much more aromatic than most with the same minty note as the Hill of Grace from this vintage. Big, exuberant, glossy and easy to like. Liquorice. Powerful. Intense, confident expression of the vintage. Still some tannin there, though not as much as on the Hill of Grace. (JR)

Bright ruby-red. Superripe nose features pungent cassis, blackberry, minerals, eucalyptus, pepper and molasses. Very dense and concentrated, with superb balance and thrust. Youthful flavors are sharply defined, yet the wine retains an inviting supple texture. Finishes with very suave tannins and very persistent, peppery flavor.
