(24 hectoliters per hectare; three of the five barrels are new): Good ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry, minerals and licorice, plus a hint of bitter chocolate. Juicy, dense and tightly wound, with surprising acidity for a wine from this grand cru. Lovely savory vinosity to the black fruit and licorice flavors, but this is hard to taste today. Serious tannins will require at least several years of bottle aging. Finishes with excellent rising length. Am I underrating this?

Bouchard has two 19th-century vintages in the cellar which contain 100% of the Clos de Vougeot production. Vines planted 1956, so the same age as winemaker Philippe Prost. They own two plots, which are vinified separately and then blended. Very focused and dense and intense. Lots of clean fruit, even if not masses of subtlety. (JR)
