Good full ruby. Blackberry, licorice, graphite minerality and crushed rock on the nose. Suave, fine-grained and tactile on entry, then sweet/savory and concentrated in the middle palate, with dark berry and liquid stone flavors dominating. Offers good thickness without undue weight, as there's no shortage of acidity or energy here. Still, this plush wine does not have the complexity or class of the winery's Special Family Reserve. Finishes with big, palate-dusting tannins, building length and no rough edges. Made from fruit picked in October, well after the September heat spikes.

(100% cabernet sauvignon; 14.8% alcohol; 3.57 pH): Good full red-ruby. Lovely violet lift to the aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, dusty brown spices, graphite and tobacco. Juicy, spicy and perfumed, with lively balancing acidity giving a light touch to the flavors of red fruits, graphite, tobacco and spices. Not hugely dense but seamless, vibrant and long.

A little bit darker than the 2009, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid shares that wine's total silkiness and textural polish. Blackberries, menthol, licorice and sweet spices are all layered into the saline-infused finish. Today, the 2010 is a bit lighter than the 2009. It will be interesting to see if the wine fleshes out. Still, there is plenty of underlying structure, not to mention beauty, in the glass.

First planted by vineyard guru Mike Wolf in 1999, Meteor has emerged as one of the top sites in Coombsville, not just for these wines, but also for the handful of other wineries who source fruit here. Dawnine Dyer makes the wines for proprietors Barry and Tracy Schuler, who came to Napa Valley after highly successful careers in technology. Tel. (707) 258-2900
