Tasting notes
The 2011 Echézeaux Grand Cru was served blind but replicated previous notes. It is high-toned on the nose, offering ample, glossy red fruit: Bing cherries, red currant jam and raspberry preserve. Aeration reveals more sous-bois scents and just a hint of girolles. The palate follows in similar fashion, with succulent tannins and a fine bead of acidity, though as I averred in the past, I feel that it does not possess the same clinical delineation as other vintages. Enjoyable, but not profound. Tasted at Arbor restaurant in Hong Kong.

Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2011 Echézeaux Grand Cru has ripe red berries mixed with freshly tilled soil and woodland aromas that are attractive but do not quite have the precision of the 2008 or 2011. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of rawness and hardness on the entry that just upsets the balance compared to other vintages. Hints of cedar and saline notes form the finish that feels just a tad curmudgeonly at present, so afford this several years in bottle. Tasted June 2015.
The 2011 Echezeaux Grand Cru was very impressive a year ago and it remains one of the domaine’s finest wines of the vintage now. It has a very candied bouquet with aniseed-tinged black and red fruit – quite opulent and more like the Reignots with hints of coffee bean infusing the elegant finish. This is a vivacious grand cru with great structure and fine persistency toward the lightly peppered finish that fans out gloriously, lingering seductively in the mouth. This is one of the finest wines of the 2011 Burgundy vintage. Drink 2017-2035. Importers: Grand Cru Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 974-2500; and in the UK through Justerini & Brooks.
Liger-Belair's 2011 Echezeaux is breathtaking. Red and black stone fruits are intermingled with spice, new leather and violets in a striking, totally seamless wine endowed with tons of nuance. Vibrant and delineated to the core, the Echezeaux is simply magnificent.
