The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru feels a little flat on the nose of simple red fruit, showing a touch of soy and just a hint of VA, perhaps, yet it improves with aeration and manifests much more complexity and personality. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red fruit, and slightly animally and feral toward the finish, but in a strangely attractive way. This improves in the glass, gaining elegance, and there is real intensity on the finish. An Echézeaux you will remember. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which contains around 20% whole bunches, has an intense bouquet of red and black fruit infused with cold stone and pressed violets; hints of cassis emerge with time. This is quite mercurial in the glass – it keeps you on your toes. The palate is medium-bodied with taut, crisp tannin on the entry, fine depth, velvety texture and a patina of new oak to be fully assimilated toward the persistent finish. Chinese five-spice lingers on the aftertaste.

The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru displays aromas of plums, dark chocolate, caramelized orange, spices, grilled game burg and French roast, framed by a lavish application of new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and satiny, with a textural attack, a fine-boned but open-knit core and a long, nicely focused finish. It seemed ready for bottling and will be a precocious rendition of the Liger-Belair Echézeaux.
