Good medium red. Musky aromas of black raspberry, cherry, game and underbrush. Fine-grained and sweet if a bit rustic, with strawberry fruit joined by notes of leather, smoke, meat and earth. Finishes with nice acid grip and length. This will offer early drinkability.

(from old vines that produced a healthy 45 hectoliters per hectare in 2014): Deep red with a ruby rim. Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of dark cherry and violet. Dense and juicy, showing good acid cut and a touch of saline complexity to its flavors of black fruits, dark chocolate and espresso. Finishes with rather suave tannins. (Incidentally, Bachelet's Bourgogne Rouge boasts lovely pure blackberry and boysenberry fruit; though it's a tad tart, its firm acidity should give it compelling gulpability. )

The 2014 Côtes de Nuits Villages has a controlled blackberry and wild strawberry-scented bouquet, a little tighter than the Bourgogne Rouge at the moment with just a faint hint of blueberry developing with time. The palate is fleshy on the entry with sappy black fruit, supple in the mouth with a tang of salinity towards the flattering finish. This is a very well crafted Côte de Nuits.

From quite high up the slope above Brochon, including Queue d’Hareng, which may become a premier cru. Quite severe and concentrated for a 2014. (JR)
